Jenny carried Erika dozing on her shoulder as she scanned the names of stores on Third Ave. Erika sagged in her arms. At a pizzeria Jenny set her down while she borrowed a phone book. “I want to go home,” Erika whined. “In a minute.” Jenny searched the pages. She’d seen the store she was looking for months ago. She had stood outside for a long while staring into its window. “I’m tired,” Erika argued. “In a minute. We’re almost there. Don’t you want a present?”
